Deep Blue Sea is a 1999 sci-fi thriller directed by Renny Harlin about a catastrophic situation at an undersea research facility. Researchers have been genetically engineering mako sharks to increase their intelligence as part of an effort to find a cure for Alzheimer’s disease. When a storm damages the remote lab called Aquatica, the enhanced sharks escape their containment and begin hunting the staff. Samuel L. Jackson plays a corporate executive touring the facility at the worst possible moment, LL Cool J appears as the complex’s cook, and Saffron Burrows leads an ensemble cast that includes Michael Rapaport and Jacqueline McKenzie as scientists fighting for survival against increasingly intelligent predators.
