Sam Peckinpah’s directorial debut, The Deadly Companions, arrived in 1961 as a Western drama featuring Brian Keith as an ex-army officer burdened by guilt. After accidentally shooting the son of Kit Tilden (Maureen O’Hara) during an attempt to stop a robbery, Keith’s character seeks redemption by guiding her funeral procession through hostile Apache territory. Along the way, two questionable companions, Turk and Billy Keplinger (Steve Cochran), join the dangerous journey for reasons known only to the protagonist. Despite working under constraints that prevented him from rewriting the script or overseeing the final edit, Peckinpah’s assured direction and distinctive visual style emerge throughout, establishing thematic concerns that would define his later work.

This is a single-disc DVD presentation with a runtime of 93 minutes, rated Approved by the Motion Picture Association. Distributed by Pathé-America, this Cary Roan Signature Edition offers a chance to own a piece of early Peckinpah cinema on physical media at a used price.
