Aaron Copland composed three symphonies that showcase different periods of his creative development. Symphony No. 1 originated as his 1924 Symphony for Organ and Orchestra, while the Short Symphony (No. 2) emerged in 1933 with its intricate rhythmic language and transparent orchestration. The Dance Symphony rounds out this collection of works that reveal Copland’s musical voice before he turned to the populist masterworks for which he became widely known. Conductor Marin Alsop leads the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra through these three compositions, offering interpretations that demonstrate the sophistication and individuality of these earlier symphonic efforts.

This Naxos release presents all three symphonies on a single CD. The performances are polished and assured, providing an excellent introduction to this less frequently heard corner of Copland’s symphonic catalog. A used copy from us offers you the chance to explore these important works at a fraction of retail cost.
