Joaquin Turina (1882-1949) was a Spanish Romantic composer who created a distinctive body of guitar works blending European art music traditions with Spanish vernacular idioms. This collection showcases his range across both abstract and nationalistic pieces: the Sonata Op. 61 demonstrates his harmonic ambitions and desire to transcend purely local styles, while works like the Homenaje A Tárrega celebrate Spanish guitar heritage through virtuosic displays of Romantic technique. Pieces such as Fandanguillo and Sevillana reveal Turina’s gift for conjuring vivid scenes through melody and rhythm without relying on words.

Released in 2015, this CD features guitarist Jan Depreter performing Turina’s complete guitar music across eight tracks totaling approximately 30 minutes. Depreter, himself a composer, brings interpretive insight to these works, particularly in capturing the concentrated drama of Sevillana and the bold character of Fandanguillo. Acquiring this used copy lets you explore an important Spanish guitar repertoire at a fraction of retail cost.
