Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund direct this 2002 Brazilian crime drama set in Rio de Janeiro’s favelas during the 1970s. The film follows two young men from the same neighborhood whose lives take sharply different directions: one pursues photography as a means to document and escape the violence surrounding him, while the other rises through the ranks of the local drug trade. With a cast including Alexandre Rodrigues and Alice Braga, the narrative captures the brutal realities and human complexity of life in one of the city’s most dangerous communities. Braulio Mantovani and Paulo Lins adapted the screenplay from Lins’ novel, creating a portrait of ambition and survival against overwhelming odds.
