The Chieftains released their third album in 1971, with founder Paddy Moloney continuing to reimagine how Irish traditional music could be arranged for an ensemble. Rather than the centuries-old practice of solo performers playing jigs, reels, and airs, Moloney sought fresh approaches to these ancient melodies. While many tracks preserve the traditional sound of a single instrument with sparse or no backing, pieces like “Carolan’s Concerto” and “The Trip to Sligo” reveal the band discovering new harmonic and rhythmic dimensions within the old tunes, all while maintaining deep respect for their heritage.

This CD captures Ireland’s finest musicians creating something genuinely new from something timeless. A used copy from us means you own a piece of folk music history at a fraction of retail.
