Catch-22 [DVD]

Movie / Show Details

Mike Nichols directed this 1970 dark comedy based on Joseph Heller’s satirical novel, starring Alan Arkin as a World War II bomber pilot stationed in the Mediterranean who seeks to be declared mentally unfit for duty. Alongside Anthony Perkins, Art Garfunkel, Bob Newhart, and Buck Henry, Arkin navigates the absurd catch-22 of military logic: he can be grounded for insanity, but requesting grounding proves he is sane enough to fly. The film explores the circular bureaucracy and moral contradictions of war through sharp, irreverent humor.

This is a single-disc DVD release from Paramount Pictures, rated R for language and some violence. The adaptation captures Heller’s biting social commentary in a feature-length format that remains a landmark example of anti-war cinema from the early 1970s.
