Otto Preminger directed this 1954 musical-drama from Twentieth Century Fox, set at an army camp during the Korean War era and featuring an all-Black cast including Harry Belafonte, Diahann Carroll, Dorothy Dandridge, and Brock Peters. The film adapts Bizet’s opera Carmen with a new book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, following Carmen Jones, a charismatic parachute maker who pursues Joe, a soldier engaged to his hometown sweetheart and destined for pilot training. As Joe becomes drawn into Carmen’s world, an impulsive act of violence threatens to destroy his future, forcing Carmen to make a difficult choice between their relationship and his survival.
