Composer Gavin Bryars created this contemporary classical work around a street preacher’s simple hymn, building it into a 74-minute orchestral piece that has moved audiences since its creation. The composition takes a found recording of a homeless man singing a looping melody and gradually layers it with full orchestral arrangements, introducing instruments incrementally from delicate string sweeps to the complete ensemble. Tom Waits joins with his distinctive voice near the work’s conclusion, adding another emotional dimension to this minimalist exploration of faith and human vulnerability.

This CD contains six tracks presenting different orchestral versions of “Tramp With Orchestra” alongside the final pairing of Waits’ voice with high strings, ranging from a string quartet arrangement to the full orchestral treatment. A used copy of this moving and tragically beautiful recording offers you the chance to experience Bryars’ rare work that appeals directly to the emotional core without subtlety or pretense.
