Black Stars is a post-bop jazz album released in 2001 by pianist Jason Moran on Blue Note Records. Moran’s third album as a leader for the label, produced by Greg Osby, features the pianist in collaboration with saxophonist, flutist, and pianist Sam Rivers, a key figure from Blue Note’s most experimental era. The music blends hard bop’s structured approach with the density and freedom of free jazz, creating complex, layered compositions that shift between introspective and energetic moods. Standout moments include the lyrical duet “Say Peace” and the delicate “Summit,” which showcase the deep musical rapport between Moran and Rivers.

This single-disc CD contains eleven original compositions including “Foot Under Foot,” “Kinda Dukish,” “Earth Song,” and “Sound It Out,” with a total runtime of approximately 53 minutes. The album captures Moran’s contemporary vision while drawing from jazz’s more radical past, creating music that recalls the early work of pianist Andrew Hill.
