Black Hawk Down

CD Details

Hans Zimmer composed the score for Black Hawk Down, director Ridley Scott’s 2001 film adaptation of Mark Bowden’s account of the 1993 American military intervention in Somalia. Working under an intense 15-day deadline, Zimmer created nearly two hours of music that blends electronic and ambient textures with modern classical orchestration. The score portrays the conflict through the lens of two warring cultures, fusing thrash guitar, speed metal rhythms, and hip-hop elements with the indigenous music of North Africa. Contributions from Senegalese vocalist Baaba Maal, Algerian artist Rachid Tara, and a duet featuring Lisa Gerrard enhance the composition, while Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros provide a rendition of “Minstrel Boy” that reflects the military’s sense of brotherhood.
