In 1962, CBS hit a ratings gusher with The Beverly Hillbillies, a rustic sitcom about a poor mountaineer turned oil baron who relocates, along with his eccentric clan, to ‘the Hills of Beverly.’ Moving into a Beverly Hills mansion, the Clampett’s retain their woodsy, hillbilly life-style, which is hilariously at odds with their new found status among their wealthy neighbors. In their simplicity and humanity, it is often the seemingly out of touch Clampett’s that get it right, while their neighbors are shown up as shallow, shielded truly out of touch. In addition to sidesplitting comedic writing and bountiful sight gags, the real key to the great success of The Beverly Hillbillies was its irrepressible cast.
