CD Details
Because is a 2023 CD featuring countertenor Reginald Mobley and pianist Baptiste Trotignon exploring the spiritual traditions and compositions of African American musicians. Recorded for Alpha Records, the album celebrates classic spirituals like Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child, Were You There, and Steal Away alongside works by Black composers Harry T. Burleigh and Florence Price. These songs emerged from centuries of African American experience, conveying both suffering and resilience, longing and hope. Trotignon’s refined piano arrangements complement Mobley’s expressive voice as they honor the emotional depth and musical legacy of these traditions.
This CD contains ten tracks including interpretations of traditional spirituals and Price’s composition Because, which inspired the album’s title. The album takes its name from Price’s setting of a Paul Laurence Dunbar poem exploring themes of love and devotion. Add this thoughtful recording to your collection at a used price that makes exploring these essential American musical traditions more accessible.
