CD Details
Johann Sebastian Bach composed two sacred vocal works presented here by the English Baroque Soloists and soprano Hannah Morrison. The Actus Tragicus, BWV 106, dates to around 1707 and sets a meditation on mortality and divine grace. The Easter Oratorio, BWV 249, originated as a simple cantata in 1725 before Bach revised it around 1738 into a more elaborate work with deeper spiritual reflection and narrative dimension, making it one of his less frequently performed choral compositions.
This 2014 CD release on the Sdg label features soloists Hannah Morrison, Meg Bragle, Nicholas Mulroy, and Peter Harvey performing both works. The package includes a 28-page booklet with notes by John Eliot Gardiner and texts in German, English, and French. Add this recording to your collection at a used price that makes Bach’s sacred music more accessible.
