Andrzej Wajda directed this 1958 Polish drama set during the final moments of World War II in a small town. Zbigniew Cybulski stars as Maciek, a Home Army soldier tasked with assassinating a political commissar, but a fatal mistake derails his mission. While evading capture, he meets Krystyna, a barmaid played by Ewa Krzyzewska, and finds himself torn between duty and the possibility of a different life. Waclaw Zastrzezynski rounds out the cast in this masterwork that weaves together the transformation of a nation with one man’s personal reckoning.

Criterion Collection presents this film as a single-disc DVD with a restored high-definition transfer and a runtime of 103 minutes. The package includes audio commentary from film scholar Annette Insdorf, a 35-minute interview with director Wajda alongside second director Janusz Morgenstern and critic Jerzy Plazewski, vintage newsreel footage documenting the production, and archival photos and promotional materials. A used copy from us means you own a piece of cinema history at a fraction of retail cost.
