Portuguese director Miguel Gomes crafted this ambitious four-film collection that draws inspiration from the structure and spirit of the Arabian Nights tales. Featuring the three-part series “As Mil e Uma Noites” alongside the 2013 short “Redemption,” the work weaves together fictional and documentary narratives to explore contemporary Portugal during economic hardship. The ensemble cast, including Adriano Luz, Carloto Cotta, and Gonçalo Waddington, inhabits a surreal landscape where fantastical elements like talking roosters exist alongside the real struggles of unemployed citizens, creating a politically resonant portrait of how recession reshapes both daily life and collective dreams.

This single-disc DVD release from Kino Lorber runs 11 hours and 5 minutes and includes 5.1 surround sound, a booklet featuring a production diary and critical essay by Dennis Lim, a New York Film Festival conversation with Gomes, the “Redemption” short film, and a trailer. Owning this used copy lets you experience Criterion-quality presentation at a fraction of the original retail cost.
