American Matchmaker is a 1940 romantic comedy directed by Edgar G. Ulmer, featuring Leo Fuchs, Judith Abarbanel, and Judel Dubinsky. The film follows Nat Silver, a perpetually unlucky lover who has been engaged seven times. When his current fiancée’s ex-boyfriend threatens to harm himself unless she returns to him, Nat decides to become a matchmaker like his Uncle Shya, claiming he will travel to Italy to find love for others. Ulmer’s final Yiddish film blends humor with sentiment, presenting an urbane, neurotic protagonist caught between the modern ways of the new country and the traditional communal customs of the shtetl.

This is a single-disc DVD release running 87 minutes, presented in black and white with English subtitles, digitally restored and remastered by Fame Films Inc. and rated Approved. The disc includes program notes by J. Hoberman, a biography of Ulmer, and an interview, plus a bonus short film, I Want to Be a Boarder, showcasing Fuchs’ comic talents. You’ll own a piece of Yiddish cinema history at a used price that won’t strain your wallet.
