Gian Carlo Menotti composed this modern opera for television, premiering on NBC on Christmas Eve 1951. The work tells the story of a poor shepherd boy named Amahl who encounters three kings traveling to Bethlehem. When Amahl offers his crutch as a gift, he experiences a miraculous healing. Conductor Thomas Schippers leads this recording, which was made shortly after the original broadcast and remains the definitive version of the score. The opera blends tuneful melodies, dancing rhythms, and charming choruses with both humor and emotional depth, all set to an English text that makes it accessible to listeners of all ages and musical backgrounds.

This CD contains the complete opera performance, featuring memorable arias including “Amahl. Amahl,” “Oh, Mother, You Should Go Out And See,” “From Far Away We Come,” and “Don’t Cry, Mother Dear,” among others. The recording captures a significant moment in television and music history, though the audio quality reflects its age. Add this beloved holiday opera to your collection at a used price.
