Above the Rim is a 1994 crime drama directed by Jeff Pollack that follows Kyle Watson, a talented high school basketball player in Harlem caught between two very different paths. When Kyle attracts the attention of Shep Sheppard, a former player turned security guard haunted by his past, and Birdie, Shep’s brother who deals drugs, Kyle must navigate the competing pressures of these two men and decide between pursuing a college scholarship or seeking quick money on the streets. The film explores the choices facing young athletes in New York City where professional basketball represents both opportunity and temptation. Bernie Mac, Marlon Wayans, Duane Martin, and Leon anchor the cast in this gritty urban drama.

This single-disc DVD release is rated R and features the complete film. Pollack’s direction keeps the story moving with energy and authenticity, giving the characters depth beyond typical crime drama stereotypes. A used copy from us means you own this piece of 1990s basketball cinema without the new retail cost.
