6 Trios for Flute

CD Details

François Devienne composed these six chamber trios for flute, viola, and cello during the early 1780s while in service to Cardinal de Rohan. Written for aristocratic amateur musicians rather than professional virtuosos, the works prioritize graceful melodies and accessible writing over technical display. Each trio unfolds across two movements, with the Third standing apart as the sole work in a minor key, opening with a melancholy Siciliano. The collection showcases Devienne’s gift for crafting elegant, imaginative music that entertained his patrons without demanding profound emotional depth.

This 2018 Brilliant Classics CD features performers Ligas and Atzeni interpreting all six trios: Trio I in D, Trio II in C, Trio III in D Minor, Trio IV in F, Trio V in G, and Trio VI in E-flat. These works remain largely unrecorded in comparable versions, making this release a valuable addition for listeners exploring the lesser-known chamber repertoire of the Classical era.
