Tommy Boy's Greatest Beats, the First Fifteen Years 1981-1996, Vol. 1

CD Details

Tommy Boy Records released this compilation in 1998 to survey the label’s most significant output from 1981 through 1996. The four-volume Greatest Beats series draws from the label’s deep catalog of hip-hop, funk, and soul, mixing tracks across different eras rather than following a strict timeline. Volume 1 opens with Afrika Bambaataa and the Soul Sonic Force’s “Planet Rock,” the electro-funk landmark that defined 1982, then shifts into the 1990s with contributions from Digital Underground, De La Soul, and other artists who shaped the sound of hip-hop and electronic music during the label’s most influential years.

This CD contains eight tracks spanning electro, funk, and rap, including extended 12-inch versions of several selections. The disc functions as both a historical overview and a party mix, blending radio edits with album cuts to create a dynamic listening experience.
