The Pretender

CD Details

Jackson Browne’s third studio album, released in 1976, finds the singer-songwriter expanding his scope with producer Jon Landau, who had worked with Bruce Springsteen. Building on the introspective guitar and piano-driven sound of his previous work, Browne crafted a collection of songs exploring themes of loss, fatherhood, and emotional struggle. The album’s emotional weight was deepened by personal tragedy, lending the material an authenticity and vulnerability that resonates throughout. Standout tracks include “Your Bright Baby Blues,” featuring Lowell George’s distinctive slide guitar work, “Here Come Those Tears Again” with Bonnie Raitt, and the sparse, haunting title track.

This is a single-disc CD containing eight tracks with a total runtime of approximately 38 minutes. The album showcases Browne’s evolution as a songwriter, moving toward more expansive arrangements while maintaining the confessional intimacy that defines his work.
