Alan Lomax compiled this 2002 collection of traditional Scottish folk music, featuring performances from various artists including the renowned Ewan McColl. The album opens with bagpipes from the Glasgow Police Band and moves through a diverse range of vocal styles, from solo renderings of classic ballads like “My Love Is Like A Red Red Rose” and “The Lowlands” to a cappella pieces and informal community recordings. The selections span both Lowland and Highland traditions, capturing everything from church choir performances to street singing in Selkirk, preserving Scotland’s rich musical heritage across 43 tracks.

Released on Rounder Records as a single CD, this volume balances well-known songs such as “Scotland The Brave” with lesser-known traditional pieces. The accompanying notes by Lomax have been revised and supplemented by Hamish Henderson and Margaret Bennett, offering Gaelic text and English translations where applicable. Picking up a used copy lets you explore this comprehensive survey of Scottish folk music at a fraction of the original retail cost.
