Robert Wise directed this 1965 musical drama starring Julie Andrews as Maria, a spirited young woman who leaves convent life to become governess to the seven children of a widowed naval captain, played by Christopher Plummer. Set in pre-WWII Austria, the film follows Maria as she transforms the household through music and warmth, winning over both the children and their father. When Nazi Germany’s influence reaches Austria, the family faces a perilous escape. Eleanor Parker rounds out the cast in this adaptation of the Rodgers and Hammerstein stage musical, featuring their most beloved songs.
