Mel Gibson directed this 2004 dramatic film chronicling the final twelve hours of Jesus of Nazareth’s life. Beginning in the Garden of Gethsemane after the Last Supper, the narrative follows Jesus as he resists Satan’s temptations before his betrayal by Judas Iscariot. Arrested and brought before the Pharisees, Jesus faces accusations of blasphemy and condemnation. Pilate, the Roman Governor, initially defers the matter to King Herod before presenting the crowd with a choice between Jesus and the criminal Barabbas. The crowd demands Barabbas be freed and Jesus be condemned. Roman soldiers brutalize Jesus, who is then forced to carry his cross through Jerusalem’s streets to Golgotha, where he is crucified and faces his final temptation of abandonment before his death.
