The Bang Bang Club is a 2010 drama directed by Steven Silver that follows four South African photographers-Greg Marinovich, Kevin Carter, Ken Oosterbroek, and João Silva-as they document the violence and political upheaval of apartheid’s final years in the early 1990s. Starring Ryan Phillippe, Taylor Kitsch, Frank Rautenbach, and Neels Van Jaarsveld, the film explores the moral questions facing journalists who witness suffering: do they remain objective observers, or do they have a duty to intervene. Based on a memoir by Marinovich and Silva, the story captures these men’s dangerous work covering the clashes between government forces and supporters of Nelson Mandela’s African National Congress as the nation moves toward the 1994 election.
