By now, Cagney & Lacey was a certified “hit”, doing well in the ratings and winning the Emmy for Outstanding Drama series for the first time as well as multiple Emmy awards for the HEAT episode on Disc 1 (Karen Arthur for outstanding directing in a drama series and Mo Harris for sound mixing). Film Editor Geoff Rowland won an American Cinema Editors (ACE) award for this episode as well. The two-part episode on breast cancer WHO SAID IT’S FAIR? Part 1 and 2 (Disc 5) brought Tyne Daly her third Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series as well as an Emmy each for Pat Green for Outstanding Writing in a drama series and to Jim Gross for film editing. Tony award-winning actor Paul Sand guest starred on HAPPILY EVER AFTER (Disc 4) as did Emmy winner Lynn Whitfield (WHO SAID IT’S FAIR, Part 1 and 2). These seven episodes could well be put forward on anyone’s “bests” of the series list. The first season in which Sharon Gless replaced Meg Foster as Cagney is called “Season 1 – The True Beginning”, even though it is actually the second season of Cagney & Lacey. The rest of the Seasons are numbered accordingly: “Season 2 – Back By Popular Demand”, “Season 3 Part 1 – Success At Last”, etc. as “Cagney & Lacey” are forever remembered as the characters brought to life by Sharon Gless and Tyne Daly.
