Natives of New York City, twin sisters Irene And Ellen Kossoy fell in with the Greenwich Village folk crowd of the early 1950’s where they met many musicians including folklorist Ralph Rinzler and John Cohen of the New Lost City Ramblers. The sisters appeared in the Woody Guthrie documentary Bound for Glory and performed on stage at the Newport Folk Festival in 1959. Their classic 1956 album, “Bowling Green And Other Folk Songs from the Southern Mountains” features the closely matched harmonies of the twin sisters with accompaniment from the great Erik Darling on banjo. Their classic rendition of the folk tune “I’ll Fly Away,” featured on the album, appeared in the famous Coen brothers movie “O Brother Where Art Thou,” exposing a new generation to the great folk music of long ago, sparking a revival of the music. All selections newly remastered.
