Dwight Sings Buck

CD Details

Dwight Yoakam pays tribute to Buck Owens on this 2007 album of covers, released on New West Records. Yoakam built his vocal style around Owens’s Bakersfield Sound approach and had recorded with the late master before, but this full collection of interpretations came together following Owens’s death in 2006. The album moves quickly through 15 tracks, with most running under three minutes to echo the single format of Owens’s heyday in the 1960s. Yoakam produced the record himself, maintaining the bright, punchy sound of classic honky-tonk with prominent percussion, pedal steel, and electric guitars that recall the golden age of the genre.

This CD contains songs including “My Heart Skips A Beat,” “Act Naturally,” and “Cryin’ Time,” showcasing Yoakam’s interpretations of Owens’s catalog. The production stays faithful to the original era while Yoakam adds his own vocal inflections and arrangements to each track. A used copy of this album gives you a chance to own a country tribute from one of the genre’s most respected modern artists at a fraction of retail cost.
