Synopsis: Amazon.comJohnny and the Sprites is a Playhouse Disney program featuring John Tartaglia as Johnny, a young musician who’s moved to the Grotto Grove woods to work on his music, and a host of magical (puppet) Sprites that only Johnny can see. As Johnny composes catchy songs with elements of everything from Broadway show tunes to jazz, the Sprites serve as his friends, companions, and, at times, his inspiration. Through their interactions with one another, Johnny and the Sprites learn about things like accepting oneself and others, problem solving, creativity, sharing, taking turns, and the importance of keeping promises and believing in oneself. A comparison between Johnny and the Sprites and Blue’s Clues is inevitable, and the two shows are very similar in their use of music and cute creatures to appeal to and educate preschool-age children. What differs between the two shows is that in Johnny and the Sprites, John Tartaglia is a more polished singer than Blue’s Clues’ Steve Burns (Steve) or Donovan Patton (Joe), entire songs are performed rather than short melodic phrases, the music is a more integral part of the program, and the educational emphasis is on a broad range of social skills and virtues rather than specific skills like math and reading.
