About the Artist

Maireid rhymes with ‘parade’. Maireid Sullivan was born on a farm at Lisheens, Kealkill, West Cork, Ireland, where she was encouraged by her parents to sing traditional Irish songs. In her twelfth year, she moved with her family to San Francisco, California. She later moved to Australia where the legendary Donal Lunny produced ‘Dancer’, her first recording, in 1994. Maireid returned to California and recorded ‘For Love’s Caress — a Celtic journey” in 1998. Maireid is the author of the book, Celtic Women in Music: The Celebration of Beauty and the Quest for Freedom and Romance, Her articles and essays on various aspects of Celtic culture have been published in many journals and publications. Her insights have been cited as essential for understanding contemporary Celtic music in Martin Melhuish’s book “Celtic Tides: Traditional Music in a New Age” Her own collection of prose poetry, “Ancient Self — Memoirs”, was published in 1997.
