Acoustic guitarist Bryan Sutton earned the nickname ‘Bionic Bryan’ when he burst onto the bluegrass scene in Ricky Skaggs’ band, Kentucky Thunder. He was quickly snapped up by Dolly Parton to play on her critically-acclaimed, back-to-roots Sugar Hill CDs, subsequently bolstering his high profile with appearances on Bela Fleck’s Bluegrass Session tour and, most recently, with The Dixie Chicks on tour and albums. Here, on his second Sugar Hill album in his own right, he is accompanied by Tim Crouch (fiddle), Tim O’Brien (mandolin), David Talbot (banjo) and Dennis Crouch (bass), elegantly dancing around on slow numbers like “Margaret’s Waltz” and setting the frets on fire by ripping through a tune such as Bill Monroe’s “Roanoke”. Twelve tracks in all, exemplifying one of the new heroes of country/bluegrass pickin’.
